WELCOME TO DEPARTMENT OF PERIODONTICS & ORAL IMPLANTOLOGY

The Department of Periodontics and Oral Implantology provides students with an understanding of the theoretical basis for, and the basic sciences involved in, the maintenance of health and/or the treatment of diseases of the periodontium. Our aim is to bring the science of periodontics to be on par with the best in the world. The curriculum is patterned in a manner that students have access to the current trends and advances in periodontics. We also provide the most up to date clinical training in all aspects of periodontology and surgical implant dentistry to undergraduate and post graduate students. Programs in the department of Periodontics and Oral Implantology are designed to meet the formal educational requirements of the Indian Dental Association. The students are trained to provide comprehensive treatment to patients, including those requiring non-surgical as well as surgical periodontal therapy.

The Department of Periodontics and Oral Implantology was established in 1999. The entire faculty is involved in teaching undergraduate and post graduate students. They are also trained internationally and some of them are examiners for national and international universities. Faculty have published many articles in national and international indexed journals and have won awards for publications and research. They are also trainers for industry sponsored implants teaching programs. The Department has conducted research programs in collaboration with various institutions and organizations like ISP, ISOI, ICOI, MMC, SRMC and Research Centre, Central Dental Research Foundation nationally and within the state.

Undergraduate students are trained with skills to render non-surgical and preventive periodontal procedures and are introduced to surgical periodontal procedures by observing and assisting as procedures are being performed. Postgraduate students are given opportunity to learn and master a variety of surgical clinical procedures. Hands on training in various implant systems and clinical exposure to use of lasers is being imparted as part of the curriculum. Research is a significant activity and the department’s core areas of research include minimally invasive surgical techniques, gene polymorphism, root coverage techniques, microsurgery, lasers, identification of risk factors in periodontal disease, periodontal inflammation and non surgical therapy, basic research in pathogenesis, implant site preparation like ridge augmentation, sinus grafting and identification of periodontal bio markers.

Periodontics is the field that deals with the preventive and corrective measures in the management of gingival and periodontal diseases. The department has separate undergraduate and postgraduate sections equipped with modern dental chairs fitted with ultrasonic scalers. Advanced surgical equipment like sinus augmentation kits, microsurgical unit, ultrasonic bone surgical unit, digital centrifuge machine for regenerative procedures, laser unit, digital intra oral radiographs (RVG) and diverse implant surgical kits are the additional highlights of the department. The department boasts of a well stocked library with all relevant current books being published. Our post graduate program consists of mandated journal clubs and seminar presentations. We encourage students to participate and make presentations in conferences. The post graduates and under graduates students have won prizes for their presentations in various national and international conferences. Our library is stocked with an array of journals with back volumes spreading over two decades.
