REPORT

 

Caries diagnosis remains an essential topic as the accurate diagnosis of caries and its extent help in formulating an appropriate treatment plan for the management of decay. A National level E-Symposium on Cariology was organized by the Department of Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, SRM Dental College, Ramapuram, Chennai from October 21 and 22, 2021. Starting from the basic ideology behind the caries initiation to various treatment options available for the management of decay were discussed to great extent. This e-symposium was designed for delegates and students with 6 lectures by eminent international and national cariology specialists across the globe. An overwhelming response was received in the form of

568 delegate participation who belonged to the departments of Conservative Dentistry, Pedodontics, Community Dentistry and Oral Pathology. Along with the well conceptualised lectures, E-paper presentations were a part of the symposium. Around 83 E-paper presentations by 102 PG students were presented by the students of various colleges and these were judged by 33 renowned academicians from different parts of the country.

RESOURCE PERSON

Prof. Bennett T. Amaechi, BDS, MSc, PhD, MFDSRCPS (Glasg), FADI,a professor of Cariology in the Department of Comprehensive Dentistry of the University of Texas Health San Antonio (UTHSA), received his dental degree at the University of Ife, Nigeria. Dr. Amaechi began his career as a dentist with specialist training and Master’s degree in prosthodontics and dental implantology at Guy’s Hospital, University of London, UK, and he later gained a PhD degree in Cariology and Preventive Dentistry at the University of Liverpool, UK. He has successfully led cariology teaching and research for two decades in UTHSA. His exemplary record of research accomplishments has focused on cariology, clinical trials, and oral care product development. Over the years, Industrial partners and federal agencies have awarded him more than $10 millionin funding. He has authored several high-impact journal articles, monographs, book chapters and a book on dental erosion.He is a highly accomplished dentist, researcher, scholar, educator and a dedicated mentor, who touches the careers of many faculty and students within and outside his institutionin several countries. He has been invited as guest speaker at local, national and international levels with numerous invited presentations. Dr. Amaechi is a reviewer to several scientific journals and grant funding bodies including NIH. He completed the UTHSA Leadership Program (2009) and the Teaching Excellence Course (2002) to enhance his teaching and mentorship activities. Dr. Amaechi was honored with 2010 Outstanding Mentor award by the UTSA Honor College, 2014 Faculty Leadership award by the UTHSA Faculty Senate in recognition of his leadership qualities and accomplishments, 2015 Teaching excellence award by UTHSA dental school Faculty Assembly, Humanitarian/community service award (2015) by his local community, Membership of Faculty of Dental Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (2016), and 2019 Presidential award for Sustained Excellence in Teaching.As an active member and officer of various national and international professional organizations, Dr. Amaechi has served the International Association for Dental Research as the President, President-elect, Secretary/Treasurer and Group Program Chair of the Cariology Research group, and as the chair of the IADR constitution committee. As an elected member of the Advisory Board of the European Organization for Caries Research, he served on the panel for development of a core Cariology curriculum targeted for global adoption.

Dr Abhishek Parolia graduated from Manipal University and awarded a gold medal in Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics. He has been very active in practicing Endodontics and training young dentists for more than 15 years and has a vast experience of micro endodontics and retreatment cases. Currently, he is the Associate Dean of Postgraduate, Continuing Education and Research, School of Dentistry. He has been the lead in developing the Endodontic curriculum for undergraduate and postgraduate training. He received a Research Incentive Award in 2010 and 2011 from Manipal University and Marquis Award, USA in 2011. He was awarded for his significant contribution in 2011, Invaluable contribution in leading ICDAS initiative in 2014, E-learning Innovation Award in 2016. He also received the best faculty presentation (ERG) in International Association of Dental Research (IADR) held in San Francisco, USA, 2017. He has also been selected as a reviewer for Cariology Research, International Association of Dental Research (IADR)/PER, 2017-2018 and nominated for the secretary post, 2018-2019 and vice president post IADR Cariology group. He is a member of ICDAS National Benchmark Group, Malaysia. He has secured national grants worth of total 100,000 USD as a principle and/or co-investigator. He has published more than 70 scientific papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals and authored five chapters in three text books. He has conducted workshops and lectured locally and internationally at many countries namely India, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Dubai, Brazil, Hong Kong Australia, Dominican Republic, Belgium and Canada. His key research interest areas are disinfection in endodontics, bioactive molecules, endodontic microbiology and clinical governance.

Dr.R.Ramya holds a post graduate degree in Oral Pathology& Microbiology and has 14 years of postgraduate teaching experience. She also has a post graduate diploma in tobacco control from Annamalai University. She secureda gold medal in her post graduate program and was selected for the INSPIRE scholarship program for pursuing PhD program by Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi-2010. She is an expert in field of Salivaomics. She facilitated the validation of biomarkers in detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and oral premalignant disorder (OPMD). She was the Co-Investigator in DST -TIDE project which involved development of a novel neuro electrostimulator for management of salivary secretion in Xerostomia ( Dry mouth) in elderly patients which has been filed for Indian & International patent. The device bagged two National level awards for its novelty and design. She has worked on a project in quantification of Human papilloma virus 16 & 18 in oral premalignant lesions and Oral cancer. She was part of the team which conducted large scale epidemiological study at Andaman & Nicobar islands on prevalence of Oral Potentially malignant oral disorders. She is passionate about phytotherapeutics and is currently working on establishment of In-Vitro disease models of oral potentially malignant disorders. She is currently working on a joint project with the National Centre for NanoScience and Nanotechnology, University of Madrason Nanoscale flexible haemostat funded by BIRAC, New Delhi. She has 60 publications and has co-authored 4 textbooks.She has 1 international and 5 national patents for her medical device innovations.Her significant past credentials include research coordinator of the InstitutionalReview board ,Guest-Editor of SRM Journal of Dental Research and Nodal officer for National Institutional Ranking Framework Committee -2020 and is currently employed at Saveetha dental College as a Professor& Head of Oral Biology department. She is also the Assistant Dean of office ofMedia Management. She is also the director of Triumph Academy which serves as a centre for excellence in dentistry.

Dr. Krithika Datta was the Associate Editor of Journal of Conservative Dentistry from 2008 to 2015 and is now appointed as Advisor of Journal operations. Honoured with the “Best Outgoing Dental Graduate” from Saveetha Dental College in the year 2003, she has won 5 gold medals during her under-graduation. In 2012, she was the recipient of the prestigious “Best Young Dentist Award” instituted by the Tamilnadu Dr. MGR Medical University. In 2016, she won the “Young Achiever Award” instituted by Conservative Dentist and Endodontist Association of Tamilnadu (CEAT). She has 32 publications in indexed peer-reviewed journals. She is a reviewer for Journal of Endodontics, Journal of Prosthodontic Research, BMC Microbiology, Frontiers in Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics and three other national journals. She serves as an Editorial board member in Clinical Oral Investigations. She has over 100 invited guest lectures to her credit.

 

She is passionate about research and her area of interest is Cariology. She is a member of the European Organization for Caries Research (ORCA) since 2010. Her research interests include understanding Dental caries dynamics in vulnerable Indian population, caries biofilm models and biomechanics of dentin. Currently, she has set up the Department of Cariology at Saveetha Dental College, which is first of its kind in India and heading is the same.

Dr. VIJAY PRAKASH MATHUR has been working in AIIMS for past 21 years and has been serving in various capacities for the National Oral Health Programme from its very initial years. He has been involved in formulation of various policies and guidelines for Govt of India. He has been awarded with Founder President Award of Indian Society for Dental Research, Dr J. G Kanappan Award for Maximum citations. He received prestigious Commonwealth Academic Fellowship in 2014 to University College London. He has more than 108 publications and contributions in the books. His citations have reached 1200 with H index of 21 and i10 index of 30. He has presented more than 310 papers in the International and National prestigious conferences. He has been part of about 32 research projects funded by different organizations. He works on policy and advocacy for Pediatric Oral Health with passion.
